On Friday 10th March 10 pupils, eight boys and two girls made the trip to the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace to take part in the annual Mixed Hockey Tournament.

On arrival we found out that one team had withdrawn and it was decided to try and make a select team from the various schools to try and help with the smooth running of the event. Three of the boys guested for the ISA team and played for the Westward team, so everyone had a lot of hockey.

The select team were up against it by virtue of the fact that they had been thrown together and didn’t know each other, losing two of their games in the last 30 seconds. All our boys gave a good account of themselves and were the foundation of the side.

The Westward team had a really tough draw and were in what may have been the stronger division. In the first game against Oakhurst B we won comfortably 5 - 0. The game against Weston Green was a tough encounter which we managed to win 1 - 0. Oakfield A were the next opponents and after some tense moments we came out winners 2 - 0. The Rosemead B game saw us win  2 - 0. A 3 - 0 win against Southbank saw the top of the table battle against St. Faith’s being crucial to who we played in the semi finals. This was a really intense game and the score could have gone either way. Westward prevailed, winning 1 - 0.

So it was in to the semi finals against Oakhyrst A. This proved to be another nail biter, which we came through winning 2 - 1, The finals was another game against the strong St. Faith’s side. The field was enlarged and the time of the match extended. We played really well, but our earlier efforts took their toll and we started to run out of legs and eventually lost 0 - 1.

Finishing runners up was a credit to all the boys and girls and they ALL thoroughly deserved their medals. We scored 16 goals ( Jamie 9, Himmat 6 & Dan 1) to 3 against - a great record. It was difficult to single out the player of the tournament as we did so well as a team, so it went to everyone.

A big thank you to Mrs Sloggett and Mrs Diack for accompanying the team and giving great moral support and to Bruton’s Coaches for getting us to and from the venue safely and well on time.
