Football v Cleves
WESTWARD 1 V CLEVES 2
On pitch 1 It was a very closely contested game. Cleves and Westward both had excellent chances up either end of the pitch. The very minimum you ask of the players is to work hard and the Year 6 certainly did that.
Year 6 opened the scoring with Luke scoring from close range. Westward sustained a very good spell of pressure, bombarding the Cleves box with corners and crosses. The Cleves defence were on fine form to keep the score at 1-0.
A moment of magic from Cleves brought it back to 1-1 heading into a tense last 5 minutes. Both schools had chances to win the game. A spinning strike from Cleves gave Nishaan no chance to save it made it 2-1 in the remaining seconds of the game. Nishaan has been confident and steady throughout. There was one last push for westward in the remaining 20 seconds which somehow evaded the defenders and attackers it was whiskers from making it 2-2.
What a game and the year 6’s have a lot to be proud of. They worked as a “team”, stayed positive, but above all showed great sportsmanship.
Once again excellent parental support on the side with lots of encouragement.
Westward 3 v Cleves 1
On a very windy afternoon the years 5’s put in a magnificent performance against a very strong Cleves team.
The years 5’s played some excellent football, showing great confidence to pass to their team mates. After taking an early lead in the game through Henry , Dylan had to stay attentive making some superb saves to keep the score line at 1-0.
Westward broke quickly, after a spell of pressure, Isaac and Oliver showed great composure to create the second goal. Cleves struck back quickly with a great strike. It had to be an excellent strike, to beat the inspired Dylan in goal. The Westward back three had to stand firm, making some excellent defensive decisions.
The game became very open, with both teams showing good quality attacking and defending. Westward got it as Henry broke up the pitch with speed combining well with his team mates to score a 3rd.
The Game ended 3-1 and I have to say the support on the side by the parents was fantastic for our boys. A great performance as a “team”. The sportsmanship and respect was there for everyone to see between the two schools.
Along with the rest of the Upper school boys, Katie and Jessica, the Year 4 boys travelled to Cleves for a local derby. We arrived, and after a brief mix up on which was the right year group to play, got started. Cleves put out a strong side and put us under considerable pressure right from the start! Jasper, in goal, made several very impressive saves, including one where he tipped a fierce shot over the bar! Tobi, playing up a year and alongside William, was also super in defence- fully committed to every tackle. Harry, Sam and Oscar worked well together in midfield, supported keenly by Felix. Ultimately Cleves were rather strong and we lost by a few.
Well done to all the boys involved, they should be proud of the way that they played and represented the school.
The Westward football teams descended on Cleves school on Friday afternoon to pit their skills against the hosts. After a shock goal very early on , it was soon realised that the team wwas playing the Cleves Year 4’s. This was soon rectified and like for like played each other.Westward was always under pressure as we just couldn’t clear our goal area. The team never stopped trying and had fun, despite being put to the sword.
Jessica, Victor and Anaay played well and deserve mention.
